WOOD LIVES -exhibition

Onoma celebrates the 80th anniversary of Markku Kosonen’s birth with an exhibition at Onoma’s Galleria 360.

The Wood Lives exhibition showcases some of Kosonen’s rarely seen larger works and masterpieces from the estate’s collection, honoring his uncompromising relationship with wood as a material. Most of the exhibited works are for sale.

Markku Kosonen’s daughter, Emma Kosonen, writes:
“Markku Kosonen was a carpenter, interior architect, and artist whose life’s work revolved in many ways around wood. In his work, Markku utilized not only countless so-called ‘scrap woods’ rejected by the industry but also different parts of the tree: branches, roots, and bark. He was an inspiring and versatile advocate for wood, who, with irony and humor, liked to provoke and encourage his audience and readers to reflect on wood and its use from different perspectives. At the core of Markku’s thinking was always the idea of doing things differently. He was never satisfied with existing solutions but questioned and challenged them: ‘Could this be done differently?’

Markku often compared the growth of trees and humans: both originate from a seed, grow slowly, and reach full maturity at around 80 years of age. Over 65 years, Markku had already grown into a sturdy trunk, though he didn’t quite reach his full height.

Markku was one of the initiators and an active member of the artist community in Fiskars. For the last ten years of his life, he also lived in Fiskars in an old henhouse he had renovated.”

The Wood Lives exhibition opens at Galleria 360 on Saturday, March 22, and is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11 AM to 5 PM until May 18.
