CERAMICS – GLASS – BRONZE
KWUM’s summer exhibition this year showcases ceramics, glass, and bronze. The KWUM INVITED exhibition features works by three guest artists, and, as a new addition, includes an outdoor sculpture park. As in previous years, the exhibition also presents Karin Widnäs’s personal ceramic collection COLLECTED, the DONATED collection comprising Magic Islands pieces, and ORIGO, which illustrates the ceramic process from raw material to finished product.
MARKKU SALO Susia ja lampaita
Markku Salo’s 41st solo exhibition, “Wolves and Sheep“, explores the relationship between humans and animals, as well as the wonder of existence. The exhibition raises questions about understanding animals, curiosity, and fear. In KWUM’s courtyard, visitors encounter the exhibition’s most impressive piece—a more than four-metre-tall, brown-spotted wolf that challenges us to reflect on our attitudes towards wolves.
The artworks in the exhibition are new and were completed during 2024 in Nuutajärvi, where Salo works as part of one of Finland’s largest communities of glassmakers and designers. The pieces incorporate materials such as glass, bronze, and burnt roof sheet metal.

VILLE HEIMALA Biodiversity
Biologist-sculptor Ville Heimala’s exhibition Biodiversity explores the vast diversity of nature through the medium of art. The exhibition presents the complex networks formed by organisms as visually striking, multi-layered artworks, depicting elements such as tree canopies, mossy terrains, marine plankton, and coral reefs.
Heimala combines his biological expertise with the sensitivity of a sculptor, highlighting both the beauty of nature and the concern over the loss of biodiversity. The exhibition serves as a tribute to the mystique and significance of the natural world.

HELI SÄDE Seilin naiset
The exhibition Seilin naiset (The Women of Seili) delves into the isolated female community on Seili Island during the years 1889–1945, a period when women diagnosed with mental illnesses or deemed “hopeless cases” were confined there. Heli Säde’s sculptural ensemble brings faces to these women, narrating their stories through gestures, expressions, and postures. The artworks portray both individual fates and shared experiences within Seili’s unique environment—amidst the sea, wind, and nature.
The Seilin naiset sculptures are featured in the museum’s new addition this summer: the sculpture garden.
